19 October 2012, BERN, Switzerland: The UIAA - International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation concluded its annual General Assembly in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 13 October 2012, an event hosted by the Royal Dutch Mountaineering and Climbing Club (NKBV).



UIAA backs Rio+20 resolution on sustainable development

The UIAA Mountain Protection Commission has come out in support of a United Nations resolution which highlights the urgent need to commit to sustainable development in order protect a planet that is under atttack on multiple fronts including climate change and out of control growth.



Worldwide warning to users of via ferrata sets

The UIAA - International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation is issuing a worldwide warning to users of via ferrata sets to check the websites of manufacturers in order to find out whether the unit they are using is safe.



Scouts conquer Snowdon to celebrate Paralympics 2012

A video from the Guardian website documents the ascent of Snowdon by scouts, a positive example of youth celebrating the Paralympics 2012 in London, England, in the mountains.

They scouts lit the games flame atop Snowdon.

The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) turns 80 this month.

The day credited for the birth of the idea of an international federation of climbing clubs is 27 August 1932 and it came about during a meeting that took place at a conference in Chamonix, France (21 August - 3 September 1932) when representatives of 19 countries assembled at the Majestic Hotel.



Indoor climbing walls focus of paper by UIAA legal experts group

The growing interest in climbing indoors has prompted the UIAA Legal Experts Working Group (LEWG) to publish a paper highlighting liability issues faced by operators of indoor walls in North America and Europe.



Mountain and sports medicine courses in the United Kingdom and Germany

Three courses approved by the UIAA Medical Commission designed for doctors and others interested in altitude, wilderness, travel and sports medicine will take place in the United Kingdom in November and December and in Germany in 2013.



Antarctic ski mountaineering expedition by British team includes several first ascents

Phil Wickens, secretary to the Mountaineering Commission of the UIAA has submitted an expedition report about an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula aboard aboard the Spirit of Sydney. Members climbed and skied a total of 13 summits in the area east of Cierva Cove, Paradise Harbour and Anvers Island.



Tracking the impact of climate change in the Andes

The paper focuses on the impact of climate change on hundreds of thousands of people, primarily Inca, who live in and near the Huascarán National Park in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca range which as Garrard puts it contains 600 glaciers and an ever-growing number of glacial lakes.
