Current CampaignsBelow we outline our current significant campaigns
“Fundamental Human Rights and Access Freedoms – is Nature the Missing Link?” –This paper written by Alan Blackshaw for the 2002 International Year of the Mountains has developed into a new campaign for the commission. The Access and Conservation Commission are currently soliciting support and advice from top academic lawyers on developing a “fundamental human right to nature”. The commission is hoping to host an international seminar at the end of 2008 on this subject.
“Argeos Charter - guidelines for sustainable mountain tourism in countries with development potential” - this work established in Turkey has resulted in a publication for areas and countries of the world that are under significant pressure of mountain development and do not have the infrastructure to support it. Argeos Charter provides advice on the development of sustainable tourism practice for countries where there is significant mountain development. From experience the Access and Conservation Commission has found that the freedom to practice mountaineering and climbing is often challenged when development occurs quickly and without necessary consideration of the environmental and social impact. Argeos Charter is designed to decrease the number of potential conflicts by providing advice for communities and countries on sustainable development of services and ‘tourist’ based mountain economies. It is designed for member federations to use to discuss plans and development with relevant officials in their home countries. Argeos Charter is based on the same philosophy as the medical idiom “prevention is better than a cure”.
