World record competition in Speed Climbing

The first ever world record competition in Speed Climbing was held in Busteni, Romania, 16 February 2008

First 6 places:
  1. Pavel Batushev, RUSSIA, 9.5930 sec, winner
  2. Kirill Kolchgoshev, RUSSIA, 9.9280 sec
  3. Urs Odermatt, SWITZERLAND, 9.9420 sec
  4. Pavel Gulyaev, RUSSIA, 10.5070 sec
  5. Andrei Belkov, RUSSIA, 10.6340 sec
  6. Maxim Vlasov, RUSSIA, 11.1400 sec
The following conditions was used for the competition:
  1. Four warm-up runs for each athlete on the sides of the main race line.
  2. 10 (ten) attempts for each athlete.
  3. The race order did not change from one attempt to the next to allow for equal resting time
  4. The athletes could do all 10 attempts or sit aside one or more runs and rest, but these runs would then be subtracted for the total of ten allowed.
  5. Start was from a plate with 3 electronic sensors that triggered the watch as the athlete would remove his foot from it (the athlete was allowed to have one or two axes on the ice and also one foot).
  6. Start would be given by the judge but the athlete could start at his choice (like in ski competitions) as the time would be recorded automatically.
  7. Stop has been recorded by two stop plates, each with two sensors in it, one of which (at choice) needed to be touched by the athlete.
  8. The run was perfectly vertical and exactly 15 m high from the start plate to the sensor.
  9. To smoothen the running surface and break off icicles or uneven portions we allowed the athletes to train on it the days before the competition and then sprayed it with water every one of the last three nights previous to the competition.
  10. There were no parallel runs; each athlete made his attempts alone.
  11. The protection rope ran at the upper part of the structure, over 2 pulleys, in form of the Greek letter "pi" to not hinder the athlete in any way.
  12. The record competition was a stand-alone event, It was not part of the world cup speed climbing discipline. That competition (World Cup) had a separate organization and prizes.
