Balkan triangle to be site of international mountaineering meet

Climbing in the Dinaric Alps is a magical experience: Arben Lila

The Kosovo Mountaineering and Alpinists Federation (KMAF) in cooperation with regional partners is organizing an International Expedition in the border triangle of Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania (Southeastern Europe) that includes an ascent of Maja Jezercë (2694 metres), the highest peak in the Dinaric Alps.

The expedition called “Discover Balkan Peaks” takes place 1 - 7 July 2012 and is meant to promote mutual tolerance and promote access in the Dinaric Alps, a mountain chain in Southern Europe that spans across Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro and Albania.

"A decade after the end of wars in the region, the doors have opened again on one of the most magical places in the world," said Arben Lila, president of the Kosovo Mountaineering and Alpinists Federation.

"Whether hiking western Kosovo’s wild mountains or visiting Plava and Gusia in Montenegro, Theth and Valbona valley in Albania, mountaineers can’t help but marvel at the richness of culture and the vibrant weave of people, history and nature in this crossroads of Southern Europe."

The expedition starts in Kosovo (1-2 July), then goes through Montenegro (3-4 July), Albania (5-6 July) and ends in Kosovo (7 July.) There is a limit of four participants per country federation.
