New Zealand youth join Global Youth Summit Elbrus ascent

09 Jul 2008

This year the event  welcomes the first participant from New Zealand who are among the group of participating 22 climbers.

"To climb Mt Elbrus is a dream of many mountaineers; the gorgeous panoramic view from the top of this mountain is a souvenir climbers take with them and remember all their lives. This invitation has become a wonderful tradition of Ukranian mountaineers,“ says Alexander Zaidler, event organiser from the Ukraine Mountaineering and Climbing Federation.

Zaidler reports that 22 people from 11 countries and 12 UIAA member federations will attempt to ascend the Elbrus west summit, which stands at 5,642 metres.  Teams from Spain, Italy, England, Iran, Turkey, New Zealand, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Portugal and Catalonia  will spend ten days together. They will acclimatise to the altitude and climb smaller peaks before they attempt the main ascent on July 14.

Mt. Elbrus is considered to be the highest mountain in Europe and is also the highest point of Russia.
