Second wave of via ferrata set recalls within six months

A group of manufacturers has issued a recall of certain via ferrata sets following a meeting of the UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) Safety Commission in Munich, Germany.

Following a comprehensive test programme conducted on used or aged rope friction based via ferrata sets, the climbing industry has found that some of these sets can fail in a fall situation.



Winners of Korean stage of UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour

The first stage of the 2013 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour concluded today before thousands of cheering spectators in Cheongsong, South Korea with winners and final results announced in the Lead and Speed competition.

The tour now moves to Saas Fee, Switzerland.

The UIAA - International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation is issuing a worldwide warning to users of via ferrata sets to check the websites of manufacturers in order to find out whether the unit they are using is safe.



80 years of the UIAA

The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) turns 80 this month.

The day credited for the birth of the idea of an international federation of climbing clubs is 27 August 1932 and it came about during a meeting that took place at a conference in Chamonix, France (21 August - 3 September 1932) when representatives of 19 countries assembled at the Majestic Hotel.

The UIAA Ice Climbing Commission has released a provisional list of places and dates for ice climbing events in 2013 including the 2013 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup tour.



UIAA mourns the death of mountaineer Roger Payne

The UIAA is saddened by the tragic death of Roger Payne, former general secretary of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) who was killed in an avalanche Thursday on Mont Maudit in the Chamonix region of France along with eight other climbers.

Piolet d'Or for Mark Richey

UIAA Management Committee member Mark Richey of the American Alpine Club was the proud recipient of the prestigious Piolet d’Or (golden ice axe) award for the successful first ascent of Saser Kangri II previously the world’s second highest unclimbed mountain.
