The Rowell Award For the Art of Adventure

The UIAA is to become a Friend of the Rowell Award For the Art of Adventure. The award is given to an “adventurer whose artistic passion illuminates the wild places of the world, and whose accomplishments significantly benefit both the environment and the peoples who inhabit these lands and regions.”

This year’s winner is adventure photographer James Balog. His latest project, the Extreme Ice Survey, involves Balog and his team installing 26 time-lapse cameras on 16 glaciers in five countries. The cameras will produce over 300,000 images via satellite to document glacial melt over the next two years.

Balog is the author of six books including Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest and Survivors: A New Vision of Endangered Wildlife. He has contributed to magazines such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Outside, Vanity Fair and Life.

The Rowell Award will be presented this year by the world-famous photographer Annie Liebovitz on  April 16 in San Francisco, USA. The winner will also receive $15,000 (USD).

The Rowell Award was established to celebrate the accomplishments of famed the adventurer and photographer Galen Rowell, who died died with his wife Barbara in a plane crash in 2002.
