About Safety Commission

The UIAA Safety Commission works to minimise accidents in mountaineering and climbing by developing and revising technical safety standards for equipment. The UIAA Safety Standards are used by many of the biggest manufacturers of mountaineering equipment and is recognised by climbers all over the world. Equipment which has been tested to our standards carries this symbol:

We constantly review mountaineering and climbing accidents to determine if the standards are at a high enough level and change them if necessary. We also accredit the laboratories which test the equipment. Read more about the UIAA Safety Label.

We also give climbers and mountaineers advice on how to treat their equipment, and how best to use it to avoid accidents.

The Safety commission have members from many different UIAA member federations.
The manufacturers of equipment which use the UIAA safety standards are also
represented as trade members. See the full list of our members and our mission and objectives statement.
