Is climate change changing climbing?

Climate change is changing the season for climbing in the Himalayas. The pattern of monsoons has been disrupted; they start later and stay longer. Previously, many Everest expeditions chose to do the ascent in autumn, when the mountain was not as crowded as in spring, but now almost all ascents take place in spring. In autumn they might run into weather problems as the monsoon has become unpredictable.

The glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau provide more than 70 percent of the fresh water used by 178 million people who live downstream in Pakistan, India, and China. These glaciers are critical for storing water until the summer period of dry hot weather. Some of the rivers that carry glacier water to communities across Asia could lose as much as 70 percent of their water as a result of climate change. American climbers Alison Gannett and Zoe Hart went on an expedition to climb Mount Workman and raise awareness about melting glaciers.

Everest climbers call for urgent action on global warming

Temba Tsheri Sherpa, the youngest person to climb Everest, and Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, the fastest person top climb Everest, called on UNESCO to place Sagarmatha National Park on the World Heritage Danger List. They warned that unless urgent action is taken, many Himalayan lakes could burst, threatening the lives of thousands and destroying an irreplaceable environment.
