Become a Full Member / Associate Member or Observer Member
 
If you wish to apply for membership for your federation or association, please read carefully the Articles of Association and Standing Rules . Make certain you support the work of the UIAA and understand and accept your obligations as a future member.
 
After your association has been recommended by the Executive Board and Management Committee, the final decision to include a new federation member will be made by the General Assembly. The General Assembly takes place once a year usually in October.
 
To apply, please send the following information to the UIAA office:

  • A complete and signed application form
  • Proof that your association has existed for at least two years (for example audited accounts, published annual reports etc).
  • A deposit of 500 Swiss francs.

Become a UIAA delegate
 
You will meet and exchange with other experts from around the world
 
You will learn about mountaineering and climbing policies in other countries
 
You may participate in the collaboration of international standards
 
You will represent your country at an international level
 
You will be able to present your ideas and interests to mountaineering experts from around the world
 
You will help small federations with less means to develop
 
Together, we can do a lot to advocate for the improvement of:
 
  • Internationalization of common standards for Training and Security
  • Mountaineering ,climbing knowledge and abilities of younger generations
  • Protection of the mountain environment
  • Health conditions in high altitudes


You are a committed, motivated person and you would like to represent UIAA values in your country, and also around the world. The UIAA offers you different level of engagement:

  • Commission delegate
  • Management Committee delegate
  • Executive Board delegate


To become an UIAA delegate, you shall be a member of a Federation recognized by the UIAA. Your Federation can then nominate you to become a Commission or Management Committee delegate. Your nomination must then be approved by the Commission President and voted in for approval at the next General Assembly.

Become a Commission Delegate

The UIAA develops projects with the support of the Commissions. Each Commission gathers a pool of experts in a specific field:

Access

Anti-Doping

Ice Climbing

Medical

Mountaineering (*Training Standards)

Mountain Protection

**Safety

Youth

*Training Standards Panel - The training standards panel is a highly qualified team of experts. To become a member you must be proposed to attend Mountaineering Commission Meetings by your member organisation, as their technical coordinator for training. Regular attendees with suitable experience will be invited to join the panel.

** For the Safety Commission, expertise in engineering is required and company representatives cannot be nominated, due to conflict of interest.

Candidates for membership (Full and Corresponding) in a Commission have to be proposed in writing by their member association. The proposal shall include a curriculum vitae of the candidate stating in particular his/her experience in the field of activity of the Commission as well as his/her language skills.Candidates should be able to follow discussions in the English language.

The main differences between a full and a corresponding membership are the obligation to attend the annual commission meeting(s) and the right to vote for the full one.

Full Member  is expected to attend all meetings of the Commission.

Corresponding Members take part in the work of the Commission with no obligation to attend Meetings and without having the right of vote.

Become a member of the Management Committee

The Management Committee is responsible for implementing all the policy directives and decisions made by the General Assembly. The Management Committee includes the Executive Board members, Representatives from the five largest Member Associations, one Representative from each continent, and three to five Representatives elected by the General Assembly. The Management Committee meets twice a year.

To become a member of the Management Committee:

  • Candidates must first be nominated by the member association of which he or she is a member.
  • Candidates will then stand for election to any position in the Management Committee
  • Candidates are then personally elected by the General Assembly for a term of four years.

Become a member of the Executive Board

The Executive Board consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary General, Treasurer and Marketing and Communications specialist. They are elected at the General Assembly for a 4 year period.

To become a member of the Executive Board:

  • Candidates must first be nominated by the member association of which he or she is a member.
  • Candidates will then stand for election
  • Candidates are then personally elected by the General Assembly for a term of four years.
