Ski mountaineering World championship a success

The UIAA congratulates UIAA Ski-Mountaineering and the Swiss Alpine Club on the great success of the 4th Ski-Mountaineering World Championship, organised in Portes du Soleil in Switzerland.

Imagine if no one could get to Everest or K2 - what would happen to mountaineering and trekking in Nepal or Pakistan? What would happen to the people who live around those peaks? Afghanistan faces this situation today. Its highest peak, Noshaq (7492m), is virtually inaccessible because the route to base camp is blocked by landmines.

23 July to 6 August 2008, the Mountain Partnership is organising a course on “Mountain Environment and Climate Change” in Italy. The course is open to professionals with a University degree working with mountain development in the public or private sector in their country.



Youth ascent of Mt. Elbrus

The Ukrainian Mountaineering and Climbing Federations invites young mountaineers aged 16 – 30 to join their international ascent of Mt Elbrus, summer 2008. The event is part of the Global Youth Summit.



Masters Course in Managing Sustainable Mountain Development

The Centre for Mountain Studies in Scotland are offering a scholarship for its Master of Science course in Managing Sustainable Mountain Development. Applicants from mountain areas of the new EU states will have priority.



Open Russian mountaineering championship 2008
14 Feb 2008

From 11 July - 30 July 2008 the Russian Mountaineering Federation (RMF), will organise a big festival of mountaineering and extreme sports. The biggest event of the Festival will be the Open Russian mountaineering championship, including an Open Women's Cup.



International Slovenian Mountain Film festival

This weekend the second International Mountain Film Festival will be held in capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, and the town of Dom˛ale . 46 films from different countries will take part in three categories (Alpinism, Mountains - sport and adventure, Mountain nature and culture)



Shin and Bendler Ice climbing winners

This weekend, 8-10 February, the second stage of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup was held in Busteni, Romania. The winners were Woon-Seon Shin from South Korea and Markus Bendler, Austria.



Eco Everest Expedition dedicated to Hillary

Dawa Steven Sherpa, mountaineer and mountain guide, is dedicating his Eco Everest Expedition 2008 to "Sir Ed Hillary's vision for the Khumbu and her people". The purpose of the expedition is to raise awareness of the impact of climate change and melting glaciers in the Himalayas, with a special focus on glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) risk in the Khumbu region.
