KIROV BRINGS DOWN CURTAIN ON 2020-21 SEASON
The 2020-2021 UIAA Ice Climbing season concluded with a World Cup event in Kirov, Russia on 6-7 March.
Nearly 40 athletes took on speed and lead competitions at an ice tower which has long hosted UIAA-sanctioned events and training camps. The current season has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic with most competitions restricted to national athletes or those from neighbouring countries.
WOMEN’S LEAD AND SPEED
Daria Glotova, who won the U19 Lead and Speed World Championship titles in Tyumen last weekend, maintained her excellent form to claim the lead title. She topped the final route 12 seconds faster than the all-conquering Maria Tolokonina. Ekaterina Vlasova won bronze. Tolokonina was one of the favourites for the speed title but a slip in the quarter-finals scuppered her chances. Natalia Savitskaia (24:47) claimed gold defeating Irina Dubovtseva (27:41). Alena Vlasova won bronze with victory over Ekaterina Anishchenko.
MEN’S LEAD AND SPEED
Nikolai Kuzovlev, an athlete with a fine World Tour pedigree, won the men’s lead competition topping in 8 minutes, 58 seconds. Ilia Kurochkin was the only other athlete to complete the route in the final, doing so in 10 minutes, 22 seconds. Greogry Duplinskiy claimed the bronze medal. The men’s speed gold medal was won by Anton Nemov, the dominant athlete in this discipline over the past few years. Nemov saw off Danila Bikulov (with a combined time of 15:12 to 15:56 over the final two duels). Vladislav Iurlov claimed the bronze medal over Maxim Vlasov.
The UIAA will communicate plans for the 2021-2022 season, with the intention of staging a complete and impressive World Tour, in the summer of 2021.
