The Aggtelek Climbing Festival… and the winners of the 2nd UIAA Rock Climbers’ Award are…
Peter Farkas, Vice-President of the UIAA and member of the assessment team of the UIAA Rock Climbers’ Award tells us about his weekend at the Aggtelek Climbing Festival, Hungary.
This was the 42nd Aggtelek Cup, one of the oldest comps in the world that run uninterrupted.
Organised in a UNESCO World Heritage area, on rock towering over the entrance of the largest stalactite cave of Europe. Climbing is only allowed in these two days. The cooperation between the organizers and the National Park is exemplary.
While the competition was held on natural rock, there was a small artificial wall erected where kids could boulder during the day. In the evening it was used for a jumping contest which was really fun. Everyone liked it. A girl was dressed very stylishly as it was the night before her wedding.
The support of UIAA was greatly appreciated by the Organizers, the athletes as well as the spectators. The Organizer was “Perem”, a member club of the Hungarian Federation (MHSSZ), who owns the Cup.
There were over 50 athletes present, probably the highest number in the history of the Cup.
Apart from the usual crowd: friends, parents, etc. of climbers, there were plenty of spectators watching the event. Tourist continuously sign up for a tour to the cave and tours run every thirty minutes, so while they were waiting for their tour to begin, they were watching the climbers.
