Winners of Korean stage of UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour
13 January 2013, CHEONGSONG, Korea: The first stage of the 2013 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour concluded today before thousands of cheering spectators in Cheongsong, South Korea with winners and final results announced in the following categories:

The two day competition which began on 12 January 2013 was attended by 102 athletes from 22 countries and is the start of a world tour which now moves to Switzerland, Italy, Romania and Russia.
The dates for the remaining events are:
- Saas-Fee, Switzerland (18 – 19 January, 2013): UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup (Lead and Speed)
- Rabenstein, Italy (26 – 27 January, 2013): UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup (Lead and Speed)
- Busteni, Romania (7 – 9 February, 2013): UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup (Lead and Speed)
- Kirov, Russia (8 – 10 March, 2013): UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup (Lead and Speed) & World Championship (Speed)

The Cheongsong competition was hosted by the Korean Alpine Federation and sponsored by Goldwin Korea, the official license partner of The North Face in Korea. The sponsorship agreement involves a long-term commitment by the UIAA and Goldwin Korea to champion and develop the sport of competitive ice climbing through the tour.
“The competition was intense, the crowds were great and the hospitality of the Korean Alpine Federation which put on a great international event is worthy of praise and gratitude,” said UIAA president Frits Vrijlandt. “Cheongsong, Korea is now a fixture on the 2013 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour and athletes always look forward to coming here every year.”

The UIAA also held its inaugural Youth Ice Climbing World Championship organized by the UIAA Youth Commission in Saas Grund, Switzerland at the same time as the Cheongsong competition. The Swiss event involved the participation of 48 young climbers from 10 climbing federations.
“The UIAA is making an effort to promote ice-climbing as part of the the official program of Winter Olympic,” said Israfil Ashurly, president of the UIAA Youth Commission. “The Youth Ice Climbing World Championship is an important step in this direction.”
“Who knows, perhaps the young athletes who took part in the competition in Saas Grund will be the strongest ice climbers fighting for Olympic gold tomorrow,” said Ashurly.
The UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour
In Speed, competitors climb up an artificial ice wall in the fastest time while in the Lead discipline athletes are judged on their ability to climb a difficult route in the best time.
There are two types of winners; those who win each phase of the competition and overall winners based on the total points accumulated after events in Korea, Switzerland, Italy, Romania and Russia where the tour concludes on 10 March 2013.
