UIAA President Frits Vrijlandt has sent a video message to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Congress which is meeting in Australia.
In the message, which will be played at the IUCN congress in Sydney, Austraila, Vrijlandt describes the commitment of the UIAA – International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation to protecting the mountain environment that climbers and mountaineers around the world travel to and visit in the millions.
“We are very much aware they are among the most fragile of the world,” said Vrijlandt in his message. “It’s not enough to just climb a rock or a mountain. We have to preserve the mountain environment.
“With our sustainability program and the UIAA Mountain Protection Award, we protect sustainable mountain tourism practices, and responsible access to the mountains.
Representing the UIAA at the IUCN Congress will be UIAA Mountain Protection Commission president Linda McMillan.
More than ore than 5,000 delegates from over 160 countries including Heads of State, park rangers, business executives and Indigenous leaders, have gathered in Sydney to define the future of protected areas and place them at the centre of solutions to today’s global challenges.
As part of the congress, the IUCN released a report which stated that increasing the number of visitors to protected areas can be an effective tool for conservation and community development, provided well-functioning management systems are in place.”
