South Korea, and the country’s apple county, will provide the opening destination for the 2019 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup season.
Cheonsgong, one of the most popular destinations on the World Tour, for its challenging ice wall, partisan crowd and welcoming atmosphere, is preparing to witness the exploits of around 100 ice climbers from 18 countries. Competition commences on 12 January with qualifications and the lead semi-finals. All finals will be held on 13 January.

A sizeable presence will be provided by the South Korean team comprising the charismatic former World Champion Hee YongPark as well as the outstanding Hannarai Song and Woonseon Shin. The latter, the current World Champion, claimed the lead crown in Cheongsong last year. Also victorious were Russia’s Alexei Dengin in lead and in speed Nikolai Kuzovlev and Valeriia Bogdan. All are returning in 2019.
