Impressive span of applicants for 2020-2021 UIAA Mountain Protection Award

Over 25 applications from projects operational in 27 countries have been received for the 2020-2021 UIAA Mountain Protection Award.

The Award application process officially closed on 1 June. The UIAA Mountain Protection Award Assessment Team will now review the submissions. The approved projects will be confirmed by 28 June on the launch of the 2020-21 UIAA Mountain Protection Award portal.

Applications have been received from projects dedicated to a number of topics including the rebuilding of mountain shelters, involving youth in sustainable development, establishing new climbing parks, clearing alien species in the mountains, developing mobile applications, creating waste evacuation plans with drones and zero waste projects.

Three prizes are on offer, the overall winner (cash prize 10’000 EUR), runner-up (cash prize 5’000 EUR) and best new initiative.

Projects have been supported by a number of UIAA member associations including the British Mountaineering Council, Alpine Club of Canada, New Zealand Alpine Club, Iran Mountaineering & Sport Climbing Federation, the Mountain Club of South Africa and a collective project by the Swiss Alpine Club, German Alpine Club, Austrian Alpine Club, Alpenverein Sudtirol, Alpine Association of Slovenia and the Italian Alpine Club.

The UIAA Mountain Protection Commission thanks all applicants for their interest in this year’s Award.
