Round 2 of the 2019 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup season takes place in Beijing, China this weekend. Three days of competition from 18-20 January lie in wait for an expected field of nearly 80 athletes representing 15 countries. The 2019 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour is partnered by Outdoor Research.
The opening round of the season witnessed a masterclass from Russia’s Maria Tolokonina who won both the women’s lead and speed competitions. An indication that the 31-year old – multi-World Champion – has her sights set on topping the end of season leaderboards in both disciplines.
Leading the men’s standings after the first round in Cheongsong, South Korea are Anton Nemov in speed and defending World Combined champion Nikolai Kuzovlev in lead. Heeyong Park and Lee Younggeon, the South Korean athletes who pushed Kuzovlev close last weekend, are expected to feature this weekend.
Host country China will be represented by an 18-strong team. Other nations to feature are Azerbaijan, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Poland, Sweden and the USA.
The semi-finals and finals of the lead competition; finals of the speed event will be available on the UIAA social media channels, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, as well as on partner channels EXTREME, Red Bull TV and the Olympic Channel. The World Tour is partnered by Outdoor Research.
