UIAA sends condolences to K2 victims families
he UIAA deeply regrets the death of eleven climbers on K2. The massive loss of lives was caused by a large wall of ice dislodging from the mountain, taking with it many of the fixed ropes which the climbers were using for the descent. Youth from nine countries have taken part in a climbing coaching and route setting meet in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. American Alpine Club hosts international events
The American Alpine Club is going global this summer, hosting four international climbing events. The events are a Chinese-American women's climbing exchange, the club's first international climbers’ meet, an international climbing festival called the Craggin’ Classic, and an international editors’ summit. Indian doctors learn mountain medicine
The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is organising a high altitude mountain medicine course in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir from September 7 to 14. Thousands of young climbers continue the Olympic spirit
Young climbers from around the world are planning to light a torch on top of Mount Olympus on August 24 to keep Olympic values alive as the flame in Beijing is extinguished. Call for Jammu and Kashmir to be re-opened

Chinese officials have announced a new "ecological security" plan for Tibet, which has the fastest rate of global warming in the world. Everest weather station goes online
A new meteorological station now in place on Mount Everest is providing hourly updates online from its position 8,000 metres above sea level. The station will supply valuable information to climbers and scientists researching climate change. Russia reports success for extreme sports event on Mount Elbrus
The event, which included a high-speed run to the top of Europe's highest peak, the 5,642m Mount Elbrus, a snowshoe race and ski-mountaineering competitions (vertical race and rally), took place from May 15-18.
