UIAA contributes to Achieving SDGs through Sport discussion

Featured, Mountain Protection

On 5 October in the Olympic Capital of Lausanne, more than 130 representatives of international organisations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), international sports federations (IFs) and civil society discussed strategies and possible forms of collaboration to implement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals through sport.

Recognised for its commitment to mountain sustainability and as key promoters for mountaineering and responsible mountain recreation, the UIAA was invited to take part in a panel discussion dedicated to ‘IOC Sustainability Strategy and the Olympic Movement’. Gloria Scarano, Mountain Protection Coordinator, represented the UIAA sharing information related to the UIAA’s core projects in mountain protection – notably the Respect the Mountains Series and the Mountain Protection Award – and how these projects encourage climbers and mountaineers to be more conscious mountain users.

Part of the same panel were Ms Julie Duffus, Sustainability Manager of the International Olympic Committee (IOC); Mr Federico Addiechi, Head Sustainability and Diversity at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA); World Sailing’s Sustainability Programme Manager Mr Dan Reading and Ms. Delphine Schmutz, World Taekwondo, Office Manager Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation.
