UIAA Executive Board member Pier Giorgio Oliveti, UIAA Mountain Protection Commission President Dr Carolina Adler and UIAA Honorary Member Ang Tshering Sherpa represented the International Climbing and Mountaineering federation at the fifth Mountain Partnership Global Meeting, on 11-13 December at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FOA) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome, Italy.
The meetings which coincided with Monday’s International Mountain Day (IMD) focused on the challenges and opportunities in sustainable mountain development and helped launch a Framework for Action to support concrete actions and establish policies that strengthen the resilience of mountain peoples and environments.
UIAA representatives were actively involved in discussions related to climate change, the worrying trend of shrinking mountain communities at high altitude and the issues related to waste policies which are compromising and contaminating the mountain environment. The UIAA showcased its core projects in mountain protection, Respect the Mountains and the Mountain Protection Award, and how these initiatives help engage thousands of volunteers, and mountaineers, to moderate the negative impacts on a local level.
