Mountain Protection, UIAA

The UIAA Mountain Protection Commission & the Award Assessment Team thank all organisations who submitted applications for the 2023 UIAA Mountain Protection Award. The application period closed on 15 May.

This year marks the special tenth edition and anniversary of the Award. Three prizes are on offer – overall winner, runner-up and best new initiative. Supported by the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation, a total of 10,000 euros of prize money is on offer.

A high-quality array of applications have been received and are currently being processed and assessed. Nominated projects will be contacted in July and then announced on the UIAA website.

A total of 14 projects have applied, operational in 13 different countries on four continents. To date the overall winner has come from nine different countries on five continents.

Initiatives submitted for 2023 offer an excellent mix of biodiversity fostering, climate change adaptation/mitigation and advocacy efforts, up- and recycling initiatives and education programmes.

The best new initiative and runner-up will be announced in October with the winner being confirmed, as is tradition, during a special ceremony as part of the UIAA General Assembly. This year it will be held in Trabzon, Türkiye on 21 October.
