Following significant international interest, the application process for the 2022 UIAA Mountain Protection Award (MPA) has now closed.
The UIAA thanks all member federations and organisations who submitted projects. All initiatives are now being assessed by the UIAA MPA Assessment Team. Approved projects will be showcased throughout August and September via the UIAA’s global communication channels. Thanks to the continued support of the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation, three prizes are on offer this year – overall winner (prize 10’000 euros and announcement at the UIAA General Assembly in Banff, Canada in October); runner-up (4’000 euros) and best new initiative (1’000 euros).
The closure of the application process for the 2022 MPA followed on from a recent online Mountain Protection Commission meeting where a number of other projects were discussed:
Respect the Mountains (RtM): The Commission is in the process of reconfiguring this project, dedicated to direct action clean-up events in mountain areas, by integrating more educational components. Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, RtM events were not sanctioned by the UIAA in 2020 and 2021.
Environmental Guidelines: New Sustainability Guidelines are being revised by the Commission as part of the International Year of the Mountains to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the original publication.
Partnerships: The UIAA MPC works closely with a number of international partners and organisations as part of a global sustainability network. At its recent meeting, it discussed the continued collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
